Physics in Your World

What we did:

For the Physics in Your World project, we learned about the different topics of physics. We also learned about how to use the movie maker, iMovie. We worked in groups of about four, and chose a physics topic. My group, which consisted of Megan, James, Eleni, and I, chose the physics topic, potential and kinetic energy. We then had to choose scenes from a movie that included this physics topic. My group chose scenes from the movie, Hoodwinked, and created this movie:

What I learned:

·      Potential energy is the energy stored in an object such as a pool of water at the top of a waterfall. Kinetic energy deals with the motion of an object such as water coming down a waterfall. At the top of a waterfall, the water is at its maximum potential energy. As the water travels down the waterfall, the potential energy is converted into kinetic energy. At the bottom of the waterfall, the water is at its maximum kinetic energy. Potential energy is the energy an object has while it is waiting and kinetic energy is the energy it has while moving.

·      William Thomson, also known as Lord Kelvin is credited for coining the term kinetic energy.

·      Potential and kinetic energy is used almost everywhere from roller coasters to bungee jumpers. A roller coaster has potential energy at the top of a hill and kinetic energy as it’s going down. Even a person has potential and kinetic energy. If you’re just standing there, you have potential energy but if you start to walk or even run, you gain kinetic energy.
