HTHNC Healthy Dining Guide

Creative Piece:

1st Reflection:

The restaurant I chose was Arby’s. I chose this restaurant because even though I don’t like to eat out very often, when I do one of the places I  go to is Arby’s. Sometimes I order a Beef ‘n Cheddar sandwich, curly fries, and sweet tea. At other times, I order a French Dip & Swiss Toasted Sub with Au Jus. I think that Arby’s is not the healthiest choice, but it’s not the worst place to choose to eat at. Many of the food items at Arby’s are cooked in oil, which is not very healthy. I think that my meal is not that healthy but that it is not the worst. The unhealthiest part of my meal would probably be the fries. After I eat the meal, I tend to be really full so there must be a lot of calories. The roast beef in the sandwiches should have a lot of protein, there might be sodium in the seasoning ( if there is any) and oils and fats that the meat is cooked in.

2nd Reflection:

If I went to Arby’s, I might order a Beef ‘n Cheddar sandwich, curly fries, and sweet tea. This combination of items would equal out to about 940 calories, which is almost half of the number of calories people should eat daily. This meal probably has a lot of fat because the meat is most likely cooked in an oil, the fries are fried in oil, and the cheddar cheese most likely has a lot of oils. However, I do not know if the oil is mainly saturated, polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fat. Saturated is found in butter, coconut, palm, and soybean oils, ground beef and meat. There is also a high amount of saturated fatty acids in dairy products such as cream and cheese. So there is probably saturated fat in the bread, meat, cheese and fries. Saturated fats negatively affect cholesterol and can lead to cardiovascular disease. Monounsaturated fat can be found in nuts, avocados, olive oil, canola oil, tea seed oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, whole grain wheat, cereal, oatmeal, safflower oil and sunflower oil. Monounsaturated fats are considered to be moderately healthy. However, some studies show that monounsaturated fatty acids are linked to breast cancer. Polyunsaturated fats can be found in fish, whole grain wheat, peanut butter, margarine, bananas, and sunflower seeds. There probably isn’t very much, if any, polyunsaturated fats in the meal. There is probably is, however, a large sum of carbohydrates in the meal. Complex carbohydrates are found in starches, such as bread and potatoes. So, the fries and bread have complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are found as sugar, or glucose. So, there is simple carbohydrates, or simple sugars, found in the sweet tea. Protein is mainly found in meat so the roast beef in the sandwich must have protein. A healthier alternative to a roast beef sandwich and fries could be a salad. A salad would most likely be low in fat, except for the dressing, therefore lowering the chances of the risks associated with saturated fats. Iced tea without sweetener would be a smarter choice than the iced tea with sweetener, as the prior would contain less simple sugars. However, the sweet tea does have less sugar than a soda, because a soda contains a larger amount of simple sugars.

3rd Reflection

The beef and cheddar sandwich has 19 grams of fat, the curly fries have 22 grams of fat, and the sweet tea has zero grams of fat.

4th Reflection

Saturated fat can be found in beef fat, pork fat, milk fat, coconut oil, palm oil, milk, dairy products, palm oil, meat, and cocoa butter. Monounsaturated fatty acids are found in olive oil, canola oil, tea seed oil, macadamia nut oil, grapeseed oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, corn oil, popcorn, whole grain wheat, cereal, oatmeal, safflower oil, sunflower oil, avocado oil. Polyunsaturated fats are found in corn and soybean oils, fish, wild samon, whole grain wheat, peanut butter, margarine, bananas, sunflower seeds, hemp seed, nuts, cheese, seeds, algae, leafy greens, and krill. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature, monounsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and polyunsaturated fats are also liquid at room temperature.
